The Kaminarimon (aka “Thunder Gate”) is a large entrance gate leading to the Sensō-ji, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, Japan. Four statues are contained within the Gate which was originally built in 941 but had to be rebuilt several times throughout history after burning down. On the front, Fūjin the god of the wind is on the right while Raijin, the god of thunder, is on the left. The Buddhist god Tenryū and the goddess Kinryū are on the backside. Under the Gate hangs a giant red chōchin which is a lantern with a frame of split bamboo wound in a spiral. The spiral structure allows the lantern to be flattened into the basket at the bottom. Kaminarimon is painted on the front of the chōchin and the lantern can be flattened during festivals to allow tall objects to pass through the gate.
